Now is your chance to get rid of those hazardous materials in your house!

The Comox Strathcona waste management (CSWM) service is hosting household hazardous waste events on Hornby Island on Saturday, June 9 and on Denman Island, Sunday, June 10, both from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m.

This is an opportunity for residents to check under their sinks, and in their attics, garden sheds, and garages for chemicals, pesticides, batteries, cleaners, fertilizers, gasoline and other unidentified hazardous wastes.

The Hornby Island clean up event will be held at the Hornby recycling depot at 3600 Central Road and on Denman Island at the Marcus Isbister Old School Centre, 5901 Denman Road.

“The CSWM service retains HAZCO Environmental Services to manage these events,” said Jon Isfeld, assistant manager of Comox Valley waste services. “They have done similar events on Quadra and Cortes Islands and the public feedback has been extremely positive.”

Residents who cannot attend these events can visit www.cswm.ca/recycle for a link to “Recyclepedia”, which is an easy-to-use, searchable, online database hosted by the Recycling Council of British Columbia. This program allows residents to search for a product and find its closest drop-off facility.
