UPDATE: The Food Bank is open at their new location:
1755B 13th St
CourtenayYou can find out more on our Comox Valley Food Bank page.
It’s been 20 years since the doors to the Comox Valley Food Bank have been closed, but the time has come and at least temporarily, the Food Bank is closed.
The closure comes after a rental increase of roughly 30% to $1400 per month. The Food Bank had expressed interest in renting another location at $1700 per month indicating that the issue with the current location was most likely not about money.
The main reason for the temporary closure and moving, according to manager Jeff Hampton, was that they were unhappy with the current building and were unable to come to an agreement with the landlord over a new lease.
Your posted information is not correct! We moved to a new location as the building we were in was not fit for our operations, due to the landlord failing to provide upkeep on the premises. We are currently operating out of 1755B 13th. St. in Courtenay.
We have been in continuous operation since 1983
Hi Jeff,
Thank you for your reply. At the time this was posted (back in October of 2007) the new location had not yet been chosen as far as I know. When I wrote that post, it was based on what was reported in the Comox Valley Record, that the food bank would be closing.
I have searched to try and find the original article by the Record but came up short, I did manage to find a letter to the editor posted in the beginning of November of that year which somewhat backs up what was posted here. If I find the original article I will post a link to it as well.
