The Comox Valley Bridge Project is a group of supporters trying to get a bicycle and pedestrian bridge built across the Courtenay river at 6th street, connecting to the trails at Simms Park. This bridge would act as a link between the Riverway Walk & Courtenay Airpark with the other side of the Courtenay River.
This bridge will act as a keystone link for the pedestrian and cycling network growing in the Comox Valley and a safe river crossing for non-vehicle traffic.
The bridge will create an artful and long lasting tourist attraction in Courtenay and be a focal point for downtown Courtenay while enhancing traffic safety and help to decrease congestion downtown.
For more information about this project, or to become a supporter visit their official Comox Valley Bridge Project website.
Proposed Location of the Bridge to be at the foot of 6th Street in Courtenay

We definitely need a pedestrian/bicycle bridge but why so fancy? Surely we could get two bridges for the same amount of money. Why covered? The vandals will love that. I’m not sure this is the best location because of the steep slope at the bottom of 6th St. What about a smaller bridge right next to the 5th St one? Or from near the tennis courts to the bottom of 1st St?
Hi Greta,
I have to say, I kind of agree with you in regards to how fancy it should be. A simpler bridge would be less expensive and more likely to happen, but would be less of a show piece. A bit of a toss-up I suppose.
The base of 6th street does make sense though as the trail from the airpark ends at 6th street right above the hardware store, so its a natural point to continue from. A second bridge at the corner of the park by the ball diamonds to the base of 1st st would be fantastic for the tubers walking back and forth to condensory!
The bridge will not be “fancy”. It will be in keeping with projects that have already been completed in the area, specifically the stage area in Simms Park, the Native Sons Hall, the City Hall, the Courtenay Library.
The Timber Framer’s Guild has already offered their services for a nominal fee. A heavy equipment operator has donated the use of his equipment. Offers are in the works for lumber.
The total cost to the “City of Courtenay” would be about $300 000. Very reasonable for the “Longest Timber Frame Bridge in Canada”
If Golden could do it with 6000 people 10 years ago, Courtenay should be able to handle just fine.
