Palace Theatre: Days are Numbered

We've known for some time now that the Palace Theatre is not going to be saved. The fire damage the palace endured from back in July of last year was just far to severe for salvation to be financial worth while, and now, after the better part of a year, the building will be taken down.

Crews have been working on the asbestos removal, and the city of Courtenay has received an application this week for a street closure on April 13. So far the application has not been approved, but it is looking like the 69 year old theatre may be gone in just over a week.

The Palace Theatre built back in 1939 by EW Bickle opened its doors in 1940. It is one of the last remaining art deco style theatres in North America

Palace Theatre Closed Indefinately

The Palace Theatre in downtown Courtenay will not re-open. The fire that hit the Palace Theatre back in July has caused significant structural damage and the building is set to be demolished.

The building owners and their insurance company have determined that the structural damage is more severe than first thought and demolition is in the near future for the old theatre.

The palace theatre has been a landmark on the corner of 5th and England for nearly 70 years.

Comox Valley Food Bank Closes

It's been 20 years since the doors to the Comox Valley Food Bank have been closed, but the time has come and at least temporarily, the Food Bank is closed.

The closure comes after a rental increase of roughly 30% to $1400 per month. The Food Bank had expressed interest in renting another location at $1700 per month indicating that the issue with the current location was most likely not about money.

The main reason for the temporary closure and moving, according to manager Jeff Hampton, was that they were unhappy with the current building and were unable to come to an agreement with the landlord over a new lease.

Comox Valley Food Bank Needs Donation

The Comox Valley Food Bank is in desperate need for donations this month as shelves and freezers are at incredibly low levels.

The Comox Valley Record reported today that they are down to as little as a shopping cart of canned goods, one bag of sugar and three jars of peanut butter for example. The food bank is also in dire need of staples including laundry soap, toilet paper, feminine hygiene products, sugar, coffee, cereal and peanut butter.

The food bank is open Monday to Wednesday, and Fridays, 8am till noon, and Thursdays from 10am till 2.
